Hair loss is a frequent problem, in males as in females. Thanks to the technique of hair transplantation by “mini-grafting” (2 to 3 hairs), and even by “micro-grafting” (1 hair), this problem is treatable with excellent cosmetic results in the overwhelming majority of the cases. In De Baronie, this technique is performed by a specialized doctor, who has already performed more than a thousand treatments, and who dedicates his entire professional career to the performance of hair transplantations.
WHO’S A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR HAIR TRANSPLANT SURGERY?
In essence, almost all kinds of baldness are treatable, even as in males as in females, regardless the cause of it. The most important and most common kind of baldness (90%), is the so called “androgenetic alopecia”. This is the “ordinary” baldness that affects mainly men, but sometimes affects women too. This condition depends on hormones, in which genetical and personal factors are very significant. Other causes are: accidents with damage of the hairy scalp, after removal of skin tumours, burns, radiation, etc. Reconstruction of beard, moustache, eyebrows and lashes is possible as well.
THE FIRST CONSULTATION
The first consultation takes more than one hour to determine the exact cause and progress of the baldness. Sometimes a blood analysis is required. Photos of similar cases are shown and you will be informed about the expected results. You will receive detailed information on the complete procedure.
THE OPERATION
The whole procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and is completely painless. The first step is the removal of a part of hairy skin from the posterior scalp (the so called donor area). This area is accurately stitched, so an almost invisible scar results. After that, the team of specialized nurses cuts up the removed skin in minuscule pieces, with 1 (micro-grafts) or 2 to 3 (mini-grafts) hairs per unit. Afterwards the phase of the implantation begins. A special needle is used to puncture the sites for receiving the grafts, and the individual grafts are accurately inserted in place. With this technique, the distance between the grafts is so small, that in most of the cases the aimed result can be realized in just one session. The duration of this operation depends on the amount of grafts that needs to be transplanted. One session of 400 transplants takes 2 to 3 hours. Major sessions of 1200 to 1500 grafts can take 5 to 8 hours. One hour after surgery, the patient can leave the clinic.
AFTER THE OPERATION
After the operation, a slight pain can occur, but can be resolved with simple painkillers. After extended sessions, some patients (10 to 20%) can experience swelling around the eyes and in the face in general. This will disappear after 4 to 5 days. The day after surgery, the hair can be shampooed.
THE RESULT
In general, the hairs grow back after 2 to 3 months. This hair will grow in the exact same way as normal hair. The end result can be fully appreciated after 1 year.
THE RISKS
Hair transplant surgery is a low risk procedure with practically no complications. Theoretically, a secondary bleeding, an infection, a healing disorder of the donor area, etc,… can occur, but is seldom or never seen after a hair transplantation. Also incarnated hairs and small cysts can occur, but this is often just temporary.
